The steering committee in charge of the "20 Kilomètres de Paris" is composed of members of the "Association Sportive et Culturelle de l'Air" (ASCAIR), which is an association according to the Law of 1901, affiliated with the "Fédération des Clubs Sportifs et Artistique de la Défense" (The Defence's Federation of Athletic and Artistic Clubs), whose headquarters are located on the 117th Air Force base at Paris Balard.
Its social purpose is to promote and organise athletic and cultural events for members of the Defence community, but also, when possible, for civilian members.
There are 1,500 members of the club, and these members are dispersed among almost 30 separate cultural and athletic divisions. Each division hosts supervised training sessions, and participates in championships, tournaments, rallies and matches.
Created in 1930, ASCAIR was in existence for most of the 20th century, and we are gladly continuing into the 21st, with our 80th anniversary to be celebrated this year.
This long history bestows important responsibilities upon all those who currently manage the association, in view of its longevity and the richness of its past:
November 25th 1930: The "Association Sportive du Service Technique de l'Aéronautique" (The Athletic Association of the Technical Aeronautical Service), precursor of ASCAIR, was created. |
October 28th 1979: ASCAIR organised the first edition of the "20 Kilomètres de Paris", which was the joint idea of Michel Jazy, the Air Force, the Paris City Hall and the Ministry of Sports. |
October 11th 2009: ASCAIR celebrated the 30th anniversary of the "20 Kilomètres de Paris", and more than 27,000 runners registered to make this a truly festive event. |
October 10th 2010 at 10:00am : ASCAIR is organising the 32nd edition of the "20 Kilomètres de Paris" around the theme "female runners", encouraging an ever greater number of women to run the race. From only 15% in 2005, there were already more than 20% of female runners last year... And this year our goal is more than 30%! |
